Our Favorite Things To Do In Charleston, Winter Edition

January 19, 2026
Charleston waterfront homes

Charleston in the winter months is truly a hidden gem. With sunny days, crisp temperatures and a relaxed pace, January and February offer a more intimate experience of The Holy City. It’s the perfect opportunity for guests to fully embrace themselves in all that Charleston has to offer.

The winter weather is ideal— cool, but rarely freezing. It is ideal for strolling the downtown streets, exploring waterfront parks, and visiting scenic plantations. With fewer crowds, visitors can enjoy Charleston more authentically, taking in the city’s history, culture, and beauty without the hustle and bustle of peak season.

Second Sunday on King Street

Every second Sunday of the month, King Street transforms into a pedestrian street festival with art, food, and live entertainment in the heart of downtown. It’s a great way to spend your Sunday and explore one of Charleston’s most famous avenues in a lively, yet relaxed atmosphere.

PNC Bank Charleston 5K

On January 31st, lace up for a scenic winter run through Charleston’s historic neighborhoods. The event includes a half marathon (7:00 AM start), a 5K (8:10 start), and a one-mile youth run (10:30 AM start). The route winds past Ashley River, The Citadel, and through charming residential streets before finishing near Joe Riley Stadium. It’s a wonderful way to see the city by foot!

Garden Lights at Middleton Place

Experience America’s Oldest Landscaped Gardens after dark during Garden Lights at Middleton Place, running select nights from January 29th through February 16th. Take your time as you stroll illuminated pathways framed by camellia blooms.

Winter Performances at the Gaillard Center

Spend an evening immersed in arts and culture downtown at the Charleston Gaillard Center. Throughout January and February, the center hosts an exceptional lineup featuring symphony concerts, Broadway performances, jazz ensembles, and guest speakers. Notable acts include the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, Diana Krall, and Pink Martini.

2026 Lowcountry 42nd Oyster Festival at Boone Hall Plantation

The world’s largest oyster festival returns on Sunday, February 1st from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Festival Hall! Enjoy live music on the main stage, raw oyster eating and shucking contests, local beer and wine, and culinary favorites from top Charleston restaurants. Tickets are $25 for general admission and $250 for VIP (ages 21+).

First Friday Artwalk

On February 6th, Downtown Charleston comes alive as local galleries open their doors for a monthly artwalk (held every month except January and July). Guests can enjoy new art exhibits, meet local artists, and sip refreshments while exploring the vibrant art scene in the heart of the city. This event is a relaxed, festive way to experience Charleston’s vibrant art scene.

Waterfront & Harbor Activities

Charleston’s scenic waterways are just as beautiful in winter. Book a harbor cruise or dolphin-watching tour for a unique view of the city from the water. Some operators even offer heated boats for extra comfort on cooler days.

Walking Tours

Winter’s mild weather makes it the perfect time to explore Charleston on foot. Choose from a guided walking tour, private experience, or a historic carriage ride to see the city’s gardens, architecture and storied streets up close. Not sure where to begin? The Planter’s Inn concierge can help arrange a tour tailored to your interests.

Winter Garden Strolls

Charleston’s historic plantations are especially peaceful in winter. Wander through Middleton Place, Magnolia Plantation, or Boone Hall Plantation, where camellias bloom early and the landscapes are beautifully serene. Without the crowds you’ll have more space to take in the quiet beauty of the gardens.
